REFUSAL

Darius keeps AI in the studio the way he keeps paint, tape, and a stack of old art books. He uses it to turn voice notes into a show checklist, pull together visual references, and make fast compositional studies when an idea is still too loose to see clearly. It gives him more ways in.

Three weeks before a group show, he had six canvases leaning against the wall. Two were finished. Four were not. He had a working series, a deadline, and a large painting at the center of the room that would not cooperate.

He photographed the half-finished canvas and asked AI to show him possible directions. It gave him variations: tighter shapes, a different balance, more contrast, less empty space. Thirty possible answers appeared before lunch. Most of them were good enough to keep him from looking foolish.

That was the problem. Good enough is seductive when people are waiting for the work. But Darius could feel that the cleanest versions were not his. They solved the surface of the painting while leaving the thing underneath untouched.

He closed the screen, moved the large canvas to the center of the room, and painted over the section he had spent two days protecting. The choice made his stomach drop. It also gave the painting somewhere to go.

The deadline did not disappear. He still had to finish the rest of the series, make choices faster, and accept that some people might have preferred the safer version. But he was no longer making work designed to avoid the wrong reaction. He was making work he could stand behind when someone asked what it meant.

AI had helped him see the field. It had not failed because it could not choose for him. Choosing was never its job. The pressure, the doubt, and the responsibility of putting his name on the canvas belonged to Darius.
